Al-Shāfi‘ī requires ablution of the person who touches if there is no intervening barrier, whether or not he intends pleasure and whether or not he experiences it. Regarding the person touched, he holds two positions: one agrees with Mālik’s position; the other is that no ablution is required. His evidence for this is the hadith of ‘Ā’ishah: “I could not find the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so I searched for him, and my hand came upon the soles of his feet while he was praying.”
