an intention. The third condition is that the act of worship be obligatory in fulfillment of a right owed to Allah, such as prayer, zakat, and fasting. If it is obligatory in fulfillment of a right owed to a created being, it does not require an intention. Examples include repaying debts, returning deposits and property held in trust, being dutiful to one’s father and mother, and similar acts of worship.
The fourth condition is that the act of worship not be obligatory due to a cause that is removed by performing it without an intention. If it is obligatory due to such a cause, it does not require an intention. Examples include cleaning oneself after relieving oneself, washing impurities from clothing and bodies, and similar acts.
The fifth condition is that the worshipper perform the act of worship upon himself. If it is performed upon someone or something else, it does not require an intention. Examples include washing the deceased, washing a vessel seven times after a dog has lapped from it, and performing ablution for someone else. The intention is required only of the person receiving ablution, not the person administering it. This is clear, and success comes from Allah.
