in the reports heard by Ibn al-Qāsim, on the authority of Muʿādh ibn Jabal, who said, “O Messenger of Allah, all the men of Banū Salima are fighters. Some fight by nature, some fight to show off, and some fight seeking Allah’s reward. Which of these is a martyr destined for Paradise?” He replied, “O Muʿādh ibn Jabal, whoever fights with any of these traits, but whose underlying purpose is that Allah’s word should be supreme, and is then killed, is a martyr destined for Paradise.”
It is also related that a man said to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, “O Messenger of Allah, a man does a deed and conceals it, but people discover it, and this pleases him.” The Messenger of Allah replied, “He has the reward for doing it privately and the reward for its becoming public.”

Whoever acquires knowledge must act upon it. If he does not, it will be evidence against him on the Day of Resurrection and a source of sorrow and regret. It is related that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“There is not one of you with whom his Lord will not be alone, just as one of you is alone with the moon on the night when it is full—or he said, ‘on its night.’ Then He will say, ‘Son of Adam, what has deceived you about Me? Son of Adam, what has deceived you about Me? Son of Adam, how did you act upon what you learned? Son of Adam, what answer did you give the messengers?’”
It is related that Abū al-Dardāʾ said, “Among those in the worst position on the Day of Resurrection is a scholar who derives no benefit from his knowledge.”
The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“The believer who recites the Quran and acts upon it is like a citron: its taste is pleasant and its fragrance is pleasant. The believer who recites the Quran but does not act upon it is like a fruit: its taste is pleasant, but it has no fragrance. The wicked person who recites the Quran but does not act upon it is like sweet basil: its fragrance is pleasant, but its taste is bitter. The wicked person who does not recite the Quran is like a colocynth: its taste is bitter, and it has no fragrance.”
