The seeker of knowledge must make his intention sincerely for Allah Most High when seeking it, for no deed benefits its doer without an intention. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Deeds are judged only by intentions, and each person will have only what he intended.”

He—peace and blessings be upon him—also said:

“The believer’s intention is better than his deed.”

And he ﷺ said:

“So whoever’s migration is to Allah and His Messenger, his migration is to Allah and His Messenger. But whoever’s migration is for worldly gain or to marry a woman, his migration is to that for which he migrated.”

He must also avoid seeking knowledge for show, reputation, or any worldly gain, for Allah—Exalted is He—says:

“Whoever desires the life of this world and its adornments, We shall repay them in full for their deeds therein, and they will not be shortchanged.” [Hūd: 15]

“Those are the ones who will have nothing in the Hereafter but the Fire. What they accomplished therein will come to nothing, and their deeds will be worthless.” [Hūd: 16]

The Most High also says:

“Whoever desires the harvest of the Hereafter, We shall increase his harvest; and whoever desires the harvest of this world, We shall give him some of it, but he will have no share in the Hereafter.” [al-Shūrā: 20]

And the Most High says:

“Whoever desires this fleeting life, We hasten for him therein whatever We will, for whomever We choose. Then We assign Hell to him, where he will burn, condemned and rejected.” [al-Isrā’: 18]

“But whoever desires the Hereafter and strives for it as he should, while being a believer—it is they whose striving will be appreciated.” [al-Isrā’: 19]

It is related that a group of men from Iraq passed by Abū Dharr and asked him questions. He narrated hadiths to them, then said, “Do you know that no one who learns these hadiths—which should be sought for Allah’s sake—seeking worldly gain will smell the fragrance of Paradise?” Its fragrance means its scent.

It is also related from Shufayy al-Asbahī that he entered Medina and came upon a man who had
