Section

Jihad is among the best deeds because it entails giving one’s life in obedience to Allah. Whoever gives his life in obedience to Allah has reached the utmost limit, beyond which he can do no more. Thus, because the martyrs in His cause gave their lives in obedience to Him, Allah rewarded them by granting them a life better than the one they had given in obedience to Him. He—Mighty and Majestic—said:

“Never think of those killed in Allah’s cause as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision.” [Āl ‘Imrān: 169] “Rejoicing in what Allah has bestowed upon them of His bounty, and rejoicing for those left behind who have not yet joined them—that they will have no fear, nor will they grieve—they rejoice.” [Āl ‘Imrān: 170–171]

It is reported from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—through Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī that he said: “The martyrs go to Paradise morning and evening, then take their abode in lamps suspended beneath the Throne.”

Allah Most High said:

“Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth in exchange for Paradise. They fight in Allah’s cause, killing and being killed. This is a true promise binding upon Him in the Torah, the Gospel, and the Quran. And who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah? So rejoice in the bargain you have made. That is the supreme triumph.” [al-Tawbah: 111]

It is reported that Ibn ‘Abbās said: “He has indeed paid them a high price.”

Allah Most High said:

“O you who believe, shall I guide you to a trade that will save you from a painful punishment?” [al-Saff: 10] “Believe in Allah and His Messenger, and strive in Allah’s cause with your wealth and your lives. That is better for you, if only you knew.” [al-Saff: 11] “He will forgive your sins and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow, and pleasant dwellings in Gardens of everlasting residence. That is the supreme triumph.” [al-Saff: 12] “And another blessing that you love: help from Allah and an imminent victory. Give glad tidings to the believers.” [al-Saff: 13]

Allah Most High also said:

“Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in ranks as though they were a solidly joined structure.” [al-Saff: 4]

فصل وإنما كان الجهاد من أفضل الأعمال لأن فيه بذل النفس في طاعة الله. ومن بذل نفسه في طاعة الله فقد بلغ الغاية التي لا يقدر على أكثر منها، ولذلك جازى الله الشهداء في سبيله لما أن بذلوا حياتهم في طاعته بأن أحياهم أفضل من حياتهم التي بذلوها في طاعته فقال ﷿: ﴿وَلا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ قُتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَمْوَاتًا بَلْ أَحْيَاءٌ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ يُرْزَقُونَ﴾ [آل عمران: ١٦٩] ﴿فَرِحِينَ بِمَا آتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ وَيَسْتَبْشِرُونَ بِالَّذِينَ لَمْ يَلْحَقُوا بِهِمْ مِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ أَلا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ - يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ﴾ [آل عمران: ١٧٠ - ١٧١]، وروي عن النبي ﷺ من رواية أبي سعيد الخدري أنه قال: «الشهداء يغدون ويروحون إلى الجنة ثم يكون مأواهم إلى قناديل معلقة تحت العرش»، وقال تعالى: ﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ اشْتَرَى مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنْفُسَهُمْ وَأَمْوَالَهُمْ بِأَنَّ لَهُمُ الْجَنَّةَ يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَيَقْتُلُونَ وَيُقْتَلُونَ وَعْدًا عَلَيْهِ حَقًّا فِي التَّوْرَاةِ وَالإِنْجِيلِ وَالْقُرْآنِ وَمَنْ أَوْفَى بِعَهْدِهِ مِنَ اللَّهِ فَاسْتَبْشِرُوا بِبَيْعِكُمُ الَّذِي بَايَعْتُمْ بِهِ وَذَلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ﴾ [التوبة: ١١١]، وروي عن ابن عباس أنه قال: لقد أغلى لهم. وقال تعالى: ﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا هَلْ أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَى تِجَارَةٍ تُنْجِيكُمْ مِنْ عَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ﴾ [الصف: ١٠] ﴿تُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَتُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ بِأَمْوَالِكُمْ وَأَنْفُسِكُمْ ذَلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ﴾ [الصف: ١١] ﴿يَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ وَيُدْخِلْكُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الأَنْهَارُ وَمَسَاكِنَ طَيِّبَةً فِي جَنَّاتِ عَدْنٍ ذَلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ﴾ [الصف: ١٢] ﴿وَأُخْرَى تُحِبُّونَهَا نَصْرٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَفَتْحٌ قَرِيبٌ وَبَشِّرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ﴾ [الصف: ١٣]، وقال تعالى: ﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الَّذِينَ يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِهِ صَفًّا كَأَنَّهُمْ بُنْيَانٌ مَرْصُوصٌ﴾ [الصف: ٤]،
