Al-Muqaddimāt al-MumahhidātIbn Rush al-Jadd

“Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them to grow.” [al-Tawbah: 103] This is clear and evident, yet I have not seen it stated by any earlier scholar who discussed this meaning. Success comes only through Allah.

Section on the Obligation of Zakat

Zakat is obligatory just as prayer is obligatory. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has enjoined it upon His servants and coupled it with prayer in numerous verses of His Book. He, Most High, says:

“Establish prayer and give zakat.” [al-Baqarah: 43]

He, Most High, also says:

“But if they repent, establish prayer and give zakat, then let them go their way.” [al-Tawbah: 5]

“But if they repent, establish prayer and give zakat, then they are your brothers in religion.” [al-Tawbah: 11]

“They were commanded only to worship Allah, devoting their religion sincerely to Him, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and give zakat.” [al-Bayyinah: 5]

“Successful indeed are the believers,” [al-Mu’minūn: 1] “those who are humble in their prayer,” [al-Mu’minūn: 2] “those who turn away from idle talk,” [al-Mu’minūn: 3] “and those who give zakat.” [al-Mu’minūn: 4]

“Successful indeed is whoever purifies himself,” [al-A‘lā: 14] “remembers the name of his Lord and prays.” [al-A‘lā: 15]

There are many similar passages in the Quran.

Section

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Islam is built upon five: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, giving zakat, fasting the month of Ramadan, and making pilgrimage to the House for whoever is able to undertake it.”

It is also related from him, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that he stood before the people and said: “O people, a visitor from my Lord came to me in a dream and said to me, ‘O Muhammad, there is no prayer for one who has no

﴿خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِمْ بِهَا﴾ [التوبة: ١٠٣]، وذلك بين ظاهر ولم أره لمن تقدم، ممن على هذا المعنى تكلم، وبالله التوفيق. فصل في وجوب الزكاة والزكاة واجبة كوجوب الصلاة، أوجبها الله ﷿ على عباده وقرنها بها في غير ما آية من كتابه فقال تعالى: ﴿وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ﴾ [البقرة: ٤٣]، وقال تعالى: ﴿فَإِنْ تَابُوا وَأَقَامُوا الصَّلاةَ وَآتَوُا الزَّكَاةَ فَخَلُّوا سَبِيلَهُمْ﴾ [التوبة: ٥]، وقال تعالى: ﴿فَإِنْ تَابُوا وَأَقَامُوا الصَّلاةَ وَآتَوُا الزَّكَاةَ فَإِخْوَانُكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ﴾ [التوبة: ١١]، وقال تعالى: ﴿وَمَا أُمِرُوا إِلا لِيَعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ حُنَفَاءَ وَيُقِيمُوا الصَّلاةَ وَيُؤْتُوا الزَّكَاةَ﴾ [البينة: ٥]، وقال تعالى: ﴿قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ﴾ [المؤمنون: ١] ﴿الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ﴾ [المؤمنون: ٢] ﴿وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ اللَّغْوِ مُعْرِضُونَ﴾ [المؤمنون: ٣] ﴿وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِلزَّكَاةِ فَاعِلُونَ﴾ [المؤمنون: ٤]، وقال تعالى: ﴿قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَنْ تَزَكَّى﴾ [الأعلى: ١٤] ﴿وَذَكَرَ اسْمَ رَبِّهِ فَصَلَّى﴾ [الأعلى: ١٥]، ومثل هذا في القرآن كثير. فصل وهي إحدى دعائم الإسلام الخمس. قال رسول الله ﷺ: «بنى الإسلام على خمس شهادة أن لا إله إلا الله وأن محمدا رسول الله، وإقام الصلاة، وإيتاء الزكاة، وصيام شهر رمضان، وحج البيت من استطاع إليه سبيلا». وروي عنه ﷺ «أنه قام في الناس فقال: "يا أيها الناس إنه أتاني آت من ربي في المنام فقال لي يا محمد إنه لا صلاة لمن لا
