If, however, they remain seated and pronounce the closing salutation with him, according to the view permitting this, and the imam had forgotten that he was travelling or had intended from the outset to offer the prayer in full, one opinion is that they must repeat it within its prescribed time. This is Sahnลซnโs view. Another opinion is that they need not repeat it; this is his position in al-Mudawwana.
If the imam began intending to pray two rakสฟahs but then deliberately offered the prayer in full, they must repeat it both within its prescribed time and after it has elapsed, because, according to the well-known opinion, by invalidating his own prayer he has invalidated theirs. If, however, he began intending to pray two rakสฟahs but then inadvertently offered it in full, he performs the prostrations for forgetfulness, and they prostrate with him, according to the view that these prostrations rectify his prayer. According to the view requiring him to repeat the prayer because of the extent of his forgetfulness, nothing is required of them, since they did not follow him in his inadvertent addition. This accords with Ibn al-Qฤsimโs position in al-Mudawwana. By analogy with Sahnลซnโs position there, they must repeat it both within its prescribed time and after it has elapsed, just as the imam must.
According to the view requiring the imam to repeat it within its prescribed time, they too must repeat it within its time, by analogy with Sahnลซnโs preceding position; by analogy with Ibn al-Qฤsimโs position, they need not repeat it. If, however, the imam offered it in full only because he had intended to take up residence before beginning the prayer, they must repeat it both within its prescribed time and after it has elapsed.

If they follow him, according to the view permitting this, they must repeat their prayer both within its prescribed time and after it has elapsed if they followed him intending to repeat it. If, however, they followed him intending to offer the prayer in full while travelling, following their imam on the basis of an interpretation, and the imam himself had begun intending to offer it in full while travelling, they must likewise repeat it both within its prescribed time and after it has elapsed. It is also said that they must repeat it only within its time. The imam is required to repeat it only within its prescribed time.
If the imam began intending to pray two rakสฟahs but then deliberately continued, he is in the same position as they are: both he and they must repeat it within its prescribed time and after it has elapsed. It is also said that they must repeat it only within its time, in accordance with the disagreement already mentioned.
If the imam had intended to take up residence, three opinions may be derived concerning this case. The first is that the prayer is valid and they need not repeat it. The second is that they must repeat it within its prescribed time. [The third is that they must repeat it within its prescribed time] and after it has elapsed. This is based on the disagreement already mentioned concerning a traveller who joins a group in prayer, thinking them travellers, but discovers that they are residents.
