who said: I heard my father say: I was sitting with Mālik ibn Anas in the place where the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to sit, when a man approached him and asked, “Which of you is Mālik ibn Anas?” They replied, “This man.” He greeted him, embraced him and held him to his chest, saying, “Last night I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sitting in this very place. He said, ‘Bring Mālik to me.’ You were brought before him, trembling in every limb. He said, ‘There is nothing for you to fear, Abū ʿAbd Allāh,’ addressing you by your kunyah. Then he said, ‘Sit down,’ and you sat down. He said, ‘Spread out your garment over your lap.’ You did so, and he filled it with loose musk, saying, ‘Gather it to yourself and spread it among my community.’” Mālik wept and said, “A dream may bring joy, but it should not make one complacent. If your dream is true, it represents the knowledge Allah has entrusted to me.”
It is related from ʿAbd al-Salām ibn ʿUmar ibn Khālid, of Alexandria, that he said: A man saw in a dream a group of people gathered on the open ground of Alexandria, shooting at a target. They all missed, but then there was a man who shot and hit the mark. I asked, “Who is this?” They replied, “This is Mālik ibn Anas.” Success comes only through Allah Most High. There is no Lord besides Him, and none worthy of worship but Him.
[Conclusion]
[The second part of al-Jāmiʿ is complete, and with its completion the entire work, al-Muqaddimāt, is finished. Abundant praise belongs to Allah, as befits Him. May Allah bless Muhammad, the last of His prophets and messengers, and Adam and all the prophets and messengers between them. This was completed by the hand of the needy one who hopes for his Lord’s mercy, guilty of many sins and misdeeds—his name is crossed out—al-Sanhājī. It was completed on Tuesday, between the noon and afternoon prayers, in the month of Dhū al-Qaʿdah in the year seven hundred and eighteen, corresponding, according to the non-Arab months, to the fifteenth of January, according to the recorded date. May Allah bless Muhammad.]
