for the reverence and sanctity due to it, given the risk of its falling into enemy hands, and because of the prohibition reported in this regard. It is permissible, however, to write to them quoting one or two verses from it when the purpose is to invite them to Islam, for it is reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, wrote to them: “In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. Say, ‘O People of the Scripture, come to a common word between us and you.’” [Āl ‘Imrān: 64] And the verses that follow.

Seeking protection through the Quran is permissible. Allah Most High says:
“When you recite the Quran, seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed.” [al-Nahl: 98]
And He says:
“Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak’” [al-Falaq: 1], “from the evil of what He has created” [al-Falaq: 2]; and: “Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.’” [al-Nās: 1]
“It is reported that when the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was unwell, he would recite over himself the surahs of seeking refuge and blow lightly. Among his supplications for protection was: ‘I seek refuge in Allah’s Noble Face and His perfect words from the evil of what He has created, fashioned, and brought forth, and from the evil of every creature You hold by its forelock.’”
Reciting the Quran and the names of Allah Most High for healing and protection is permissible, for He, exalted be His mention, says:
“We send down of the Quran that which is a healing and mercy for the believers—and this is a blessed Book which We have sent down.” [al-An‘ām: 82–92]
There is also the Prophet’s saying, peace and blessings be upon him, concerning the two sons of Ja‘far ibn Abī Tālib: “Have healing recitations performed for them, for if anything could outstrip divine decree, it would be the evil eye.” He had entered their presence and seen that they were thin and frail. He asked their caregiver about this, and she said, “The evil eye affects them readily. Nothing has kept us from seeking healing recitations for them except that we do not know what you would approve of in this regard.” Reports to this effect are numerous.
