‘Bring to life what you have created.’” He ﷺ also said: “The angels do not enter a house containing statues and images.”

What is forbidden by consensus is a freestanding figure that casts a shadow and depicts a human being or a living animal. Other images—those drawn on walls or depicted on curtains that are displayed, carpets that are spread out, or cushions used for support and reclining—are disliked, but not forbidden, according to the correct opinion. This is because the transmitted reports concerning them conflict. Matters concerning which the reports conflict belong to the doubtful matters about which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever avoids doubtful matters safeguards his religion and his honour.” Scholars have held four opinions concerning these images:

The first: prohibiting all of them, whether drawn on a wall or depicted on fabric that is displayed, used as a pillow, or spread out.

The second: permitting all of them.

The third: permitting all except those drawn on walls.

And permitting all except those depicted on curtains that are hung up and are not subjected to ordinary use by being spread out and sat upon.

What is permissible for little girls to play with consists of incomplete figures whose form is such that a living creature could not ordinarily survive in it, such as bones with faces drawn on them, and tarwīq on a wall. Asbagh said: “What is permissible consists of things that quickly wear out and deteriorate.” This, however, is not clearly supported by analogy and reasoned examination. Success comes through Allah.
