Al-Muqaddimāt al-MumahhidātIbn Rush al-Jadd

The fourth position distinguishes between khazz garments and other fabrics blended with cotton or linen. Wearing khazz is permissible in accordance with the practice of the early generations, but wearing other fabrics blended with cotton or linen cannot be permitted by analogy with it. This is because khazz was permitted only in deference to their practice; wearing it is therefore a concession, and a concession cannot serve as the basis for analogy. This was Ibn Habīb’s position, and it is the weakest of these views. There is no distinction, for purposes of analogy, between khazz and other woven fabrics whose warp is silk and whose weft is cotton or linen. The reason those of the early generations who wore khazz considered it permissible—namely, that it was not pure silk—is equally present in these woven fabrics and others like them. It was for this reason that they considered wearing it permissible, not simply because it was khazz. No transmitted report granted them a concession specifically concerning khazz garments such that extending it to other fabrics by analogy would become a matter of disagreement.

Another prohibited aspect of dress is extravagance beyond the permitted bounds that leads the wearer into conceit, arrogance and wanton pride. This applies equally to men and women and is prohibited as a matter of Allah’s right, for wanton pride and arrogance are forbidden in the revealed law. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says:

“Indeed, Allah does not like anyone who is arrogant and boastful.” [Luqmān: 18]

He also says:

“Thus does Allah seal the heart of every arrogant tyrant.” [Ghāfir: 35]

And:

“I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant upon the earth without right.” [al-A‘rāf: 146]

And:

“How evil is the dwelling of the arrogant!” [al-Nahl: 29]

The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said, “Whoever humbles himself before Allah, Allah raises him; whoever is arrogant, Allah brings him low.” He also said, “On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will not look at anyone who drags his lower garment out of pride.”

Also prohibited are the two ways of wearing a garment forbidden by the Prophet, peace be upon him: wrapping oneself in the manner called ishtimāl al-safā’, and sitting with one’s knees drawn up within a single garment, with none of it covering one’s private parts.
