the officials, and to join the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, on the Farewell Pilgrimage. He joined him there with a sacrificial camel. It was called the Farewell Pilgrimage because he bade them farewell; the Pilgrimage of Conveyance because he said in his sermon during it, “Have I conveyed the message?”; and the Pilgrimage of Islam because it was the pilgrimage performed by the Muslims, with no polytheist among them.
In this year, he sent ʿUyaynah ibn Hisn to Banū al-ʿAnbar, ʿAlī to Yemen, and Usāmah ibn Zayd to al-Dārūm.
[The Eleventh Year]
Then came the eleventh year.
In this year, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, died in the forenoon on Monday, twelve nights into Rabīʿ al-Awwal, at the same time of year that he had entered Medina upon emigrating there from Mecca. His illness, peace be upon him, began in the house of Maymūnah bint al-Hārith on Wednesday, with two nights remaining in Safar. He then moved to ʿĀʾishah’s house, where he remained during his illness. He died on her allotted day, in her house, resting against her chest, in midmorning. During his illness, Abū Bakr led the people in seventeen prayers before his death, peace be upon him. Thus, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, died at the completion of ten years after the Hijrah; there is no disagreement on this. There is disagreement about his age when he was commissioned as a prophet, as we mentioned at the beginning of this book, and also about his age when he died. Al-Bukhārī recorded, through al-Zubayr ibn ʿAdī from Anas ibn Mālik, that he died, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, at the age of sixty-three.
Humayd also narrated from Anas that he died, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, at the age of sixty-five. Rabīʿah narrated from him in the Muwattaʾ that he died at the age of sixty.
The reports from Ibn ʿAbbās also differ on this. It is narrated from him that he died, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, at the age of sixty-three, and it is also narrated from him that he died at the age of sixty-five.
There is also disagreement about how long he remained in Mecca after being commissioned as a prophet and before emigrating to Medina: some say ten years, while others say thirteen. Those who said that he was commissioned as a prophet at the age of forty
