been protected from me and that he would prevail. I called out to them, ‘I am Surāqah! Wait for me so that I may speak to you. By Allah, I will do you no harm.’ He, peace be upon him, said to Abū Bakr, ‘Ask him what he wants.’ He asked me, and I replied, ‘That you write me a document.’ He instructed Abū Bakr, who wrote it for me on a bone or a scrap of writing material, then tossed it to me. I later met him with it on the day of the conquest of Mecca, when he was at al-Ji‘rānah.”
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, arrived at Qubā’ on Monday, at the beginning of Rabī‘ al-Awwal, in the lava tract of Banū ‘Amr ibn ‘Awf of the Ansār. He stayed with Sa‘d ibn Khaythamah, though it is also said that he stayed with Kulthūm ibn al-Hadm. They agree that, in Medina, he stayed with Abū Ayyūb, whose name was Khālid ibn Zayd. He remained with him until he had built his dwelling and mosque, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. They said that he rode out from Banū ‘Amr on Friday, stopped among Banū Sālim, and led them in the Friday prayer. It is said that he stayed among Banū ‘Amr for three nights. Ibn Shihāb and others said that he stayed among them for ten-odd days before riding out.
