Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘Be forgiving, enjoin what is right, and turn away from the ignorant.’ [Al-A‘rāf: 199]” And His saying:
“Those who pardon others—and Allah loves those who do good.” [Āl ‘Imrān: 134]
It is also related that she said: “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, never struck anything with his hand except when fighting in Allah’s cause. He never struck a servant or a woman. Whenever he was given a choice between two things, he chose the easier, provided it was not sinful; if it was sinful, he kept farther from it than anyone else. He never took revenge for any personal injury, unless something Allah had made inviolable was violated; then he would exact retribution for Allah’s sake.” This accords with the words of Allah, Mighty and Majestic:
“And those who defend themselves when subjected to oppression.” [Al-Shūrā: 39]
And His saying concerning those who commit unlawful sexual intercourse:
“Do not let pity for them keep you from enforcing Allah’s law, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day.” [Al-Nūr: 2]
And His saying concerning those who wage war:
“The penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive to spread corruption in the land is that they be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet cut off on opposite sides, or be banished from the land.” [Al-Mā’idah: 33]
The passage continues up to His saying, Exalted is He:
“Except for those who repent before you gain power over them. Know that Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [Al-Mā’idah: 34]
Our companion, the jurist Abū al-‘Abbās, expressed this beautifully in a poem:
O you who seek to describe his nobility,
Do not attempt to measure the sea with a tiny cup.
For he was born with qualities beyond compare,
Whose like was never fashioned in other men.
