Al-Muqaddimāt al-MumahhidātIbn Rush al-Jadd

Ramadan. Other accounts place his birth on a Monday, two nights into Rabī‘ al-Awwal; eight nights into that month; twelve nights into it; or on its first Monday. It has also been said that he was born in the ravine of Banū Hāshim. There is no disagreement that he was born in the Year of the Elephant. Ibn ‘Abbās is reported to have said that he was born on the Day of the Elephant. He may have meant the very day on which Allah prevented the elephant from entering the Sacred Precinct and destroyed those who had brought it, or he may have meant the Year of the Elephant by the expression “the Day of the Elephant.”

The Prophet’s Wet Nurses, Peace Be upon Him

Thuwaybah, the slave woman of Abū Lahab, nursed the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and Hamzah. She also nursed Abū Salamah ibn ‘Abd al-Asad alongside them. Thus the Prophet, peace be upon him, Hamzah, and Abū Salamah were brothers through breastfeeding.

Ibn ‘Abbās is reported to have said: “The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was asked, ‘Why do you not marry Hamzah’s daughter?’ He replied, ‘She is the daughter of my brother through breastfeeding.’”

It is related from ‘Irāk ibn Mālik: “Zaynab bint Abī Salamah informed him that Umm Habībah said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, we have been saying among ourselves that you have proposed to Durrah bint Abī Salamah.’ The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, replied, ‘In addition to Umm Salamah? Even if I had not married Umm Salamah, she would not be lawful for me to marry, because her father is my brother through breastfeeding.’”

Abū Lahab freed Thuwaybah after the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had emigrated from Mecca to Medina. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to send her clothing and gifts from Medina until she died after the conquest of Khaybar.

Then Halīmah bint Abī Dhu’ayb al-Sa‘diyyah, of Banū Sa‘d ibn Bakr, was engaged to nurse him, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. His wet nurse Halīmah returned him to his mother Āminah five years and two days after his birth. When seven years had passed since his birth, his mother Āminah took him to visit his father’s maternal uncles, Banū al-Najjār. She subsequently died at al-Abwā’, with the Prophet accompanying her. Umm Ayman brought him to Mecca five days after his mother’s death.

رمضان، وقيل يوم الاثنين لليلتين خلتا من ربيع الأول. وقيل لثمان خلون منه. وقيل لاثنتي عشرة ليلة خلت منه. وقيل أول اثنين منه. وقد قيل إنه ولد في شعب بني هاشم، ولا خلاف أنه ولد عام الفيل. وقد روي عن ابن عباس أنه قال: ولد يوم الفيل، فيحتمل أن يكون أراد اليوم الذي حبس الله فيه الفيل عن وطء الحرم وأهلك الذين جاءوا به، ويحتمل أن يكون أراد بقوله يوم الفيل عام الفيل. فصل في مرضعات النبي ﵇ - فأرضعت رسول الله ﷺ وحمزة ثويبة جارية أبي لهب، وأرضعت معهما أبا سلمة بن عبد الأسد. فالنبي ﵇ وحمزة وأبو سلمة إخوة من الرضاعة. وروي عن ابن عباس أنه قال: «قيل للنبي ﷺ ألا تتزوج ابنة حمزة؟ قال: إنها ابنة أخي من الرضاعة» وروي عن عراك بن مالك «أن زينب ابنة أبي سلمة أخبرته أن أم حبيبة قالت: يا رسول الله إنا قد تحدثنا أنك خطبت درة بنت أبي سلمة، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: أعلى أم سلمة لو أني لم أنكح أم سلمة لم تحل لي لأن أباها أخي من الرضاعة» وأعتق أبو لهب ثويبة بعد أن هاجر رسول الله ﷺ من مكة إلى المدينة، فكان رسول الله ﷺ يبعث إليها من المدينة بكسوة وصلة حتى ماتت بعد فتح خيبر. ثم استرضع له ﷺ في بني سعد بن بكر حليمة بنت أبي ذؤيب السعدية. فردته ضئره حليمة إلى أمه آمنة بعد خمس سنين ويومين من مولده، فأخرجته أمه آمنة إلى أخوال أبيه بني النجار تزورهم بعد سبع سنين من مولده، فتوفيت بعد ذلك بالأبواء ومعها النبي، فقدمت به أم أيمن مكة بعد موت أمه بخمسة أيام.
