The Prohibition of Killing and the Texts Concerning It

Ever since Adam was sent down to earth, Allah, exalted is He, has forbidden His servants to take a life without right and has threatened them with a painful Fire and tremendous punishment for doing so. The revealed laws and religions have never differed on this. Allah, Almighty and Majestic, says:

“Relate to them the story of Adam’s two sons in truth: when each offered a sacrifice, it was accepted from one but not from the other. The latter said, ‘I will surely kill you.’ The former replied, ‘Allah only accepts from those who fear Him.’” [al-Mā’idah: 27]

“If you stretch out your hand to kill me, I will not stretch out my hand to kill you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of all worlds.” [al-Mā’idah: 28]

“I wish you to bear my sin as well as your own, and thus become one of the inhabitants of the Fire. That is the recompense of the wrongdoers.” [al-Mā’idah: 29]

Had Allah not forbidden this to Adam and his children and threatened them with punishment for it, the son of Adam who was killed would not have said to his brother who killed him:

“I wish you to bear my sin as well as your own, and thus become one of the inhabitants of the Fire. That is the recompense of the wrongdoers.” [al-Mā’idah: 29]

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “No soul is killed unjustly without the first son of Adam bearing a share of its guilt.”
