or a father or mother. It has been reported that there was a person who both bore a child and fathered a child. If this is true, such a person would inherit a father’s full share from the son they fathered and a mother’s full share from the son they bore. This, however, is unlikely. Allah knows best.

Prescribed Shares of Inheritance
The shares Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has prescribed for inheritance are six: two-thirds, one-half, one-third, one-quarter, one-sixth and one-eighth. If an inheritance calculation includes a half share, its base number is 2. If it includes one-third and two-thirds, its base number is 3. If it includes one-quarter, or one-quarter and one-third of the remainder, its base number is 4. If it includes one-eighth, or one-eighth and one-half, its base number is 8. If it includes one-quarter and one-third, or one-sixth and one-quarter, its base number is 12. If it includes one-eighth and one-sixth, or one-eighth and one-third, its base number is 24. If it includes one-sixth and one-third of the remainder, its base number is 28. If it includes one-sixth, one-quarter and one-third of the remainder, its base number is 36.
Thus, there are nine base numbers for inheritance calculations, as we have mentioned. Six are not subject to an increase in the base number, while three may be increased.
The first is a calculation with a base of 6. Its base may be increased by one-sixth to 7, by one-third to 8, by one-half to 9, and by two-thirds to 10. This is the greatest proportional increase possible in inheritance calculations.
The second is a calculation with a base of 12. Its base may be increased by half of one-sixth to 13, by one-quarter to 15, and by one-sixth plus half of one-sixth to 17.
The third is a calculation with a base of 24. Its base may be increased by one-eighth to 27.
Where none of the heirs has a prescribed share, the base number is determined by the number of units into which the estate is to be divided. If the heirs are sons and daughters, this is the number of daughters plus twice the number of sons,
