to reconcile them. It is related: “The people of Qubā’ fought one another, even throwing stones. When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was informed, he said: ‘Let us go and reconcile them.’”

“Jābir ibn ‘Abd Allāh, may Allah be pleased with him, offered his father’s creditors the dates in payment of what his father owed them. They refused, considering them insufficient to cover the debt. He informed the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who told him: ‘When you have harvested them and placed them on the drying ground, let me know.’ When he had done so, he informed him. The Messenger came with Abū Bakr and ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both. He sat upon the dates and prayed for them to be blessed, then said: ‘Call your creditors and pay them in full.’ Jābir measured out the dates for the creditors, and after the debt had been paid, as much remained as had originally been there.”

Reconciling people in their disputes and competing claims over property and other matters is among the voluntary good deeds that are encouraged and recommended. There is no harm in the ruler suggesting this to litigants. It is related: “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, heard two disputants raising their voices at the door. One was asking the other for a reduction and some leniency in a matter, while the other was saying: ‘By Allah, I will not!’ The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came out and said: ‘Where is the man who swears by Allah that he will not show kindness?’ He replied: ‘It is I, O Messenger of Allah. He may have whichever of those he prefers.’”

It is also related: “During the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him, Ka‘b ibn Mālik demanded repayment of a debt owed to him by Ibn Abī Hadrad in the mosque. Their voices rose until the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, heard them from inside his house. He came out, drawing aside the curtain of his chamber, and called to Ka‘b ibn Mālik: ‘O Ka‘b!’ He replied: ‘At your service, O Messenger of Allah.’ He gestured with his hand for him to remit half. Ka‘b said: ‘I have done so, O Messenger of Allah.’ The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, then said: ‘Get up and repay him.’”

This hadith is the basis for the sayings commonly repeated by people: “The best settlement is half,” and “There is no settlement without weighing.”
