lives to see that time must hold fast to the original way—the original way.”

Another instance of this occurred when Umar ibn Abd al-Azīz became governor of Medina during the caliphate of his cousin al-Walīd. It was this Umar who built the Prophetic Chamber at that time. Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed behind him and made the statement narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasā’ī from Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him): “After the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I never prayed behind anyone whose prayer more closely resembled that of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) than this young man”—meaning Umar ibn Abd al-Azīz. He added, “We estimated his bowing to last for ten utterances of glorification, and his prostration for ten.”

This occurred in Medina, even though its governors were more diligent in preserving the Sunnah than the governors of the other cities. The other cities were governed according to the judgment of kings, whereas Medina was governed according to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), or words to that effect. Nevertheless, they too had altered certain elements of the Sunnah. Anyone who believes that this occurred during the caliphate of Umar ibn Abd al-Azīz is mistaken, for Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) did not live to see Umar ibn Abd al-Azīz’s caliphate; rather, he died two years before it.

This accords with the well-known hadith found in the Sunan collections of Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, and Ibn Mājah, narrated by Awn ibn Abd Allah from Abd Allah ibn Masūd (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When one of you bows, let him say three times, ‘Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent’—and that is the minimum. When he prostrates, let him say, ‘Glory be to my Lord, the Most High,’ three times—and that is the minimum.”

Abū Dāwūd said, “This is a disconnected report; Awn did not meet Abd Allah ibn Masūd.” Al-Bukhārī said likewise in his History. Al-Tirmidhī said, “Its chain of transmission is not continuous. Awn ibn Abd Allah did not meet Ibn Masūd.” Awn was one of the scholars of
