Al-Qawa'id al-NuraniyyaIbn Taimiya

stillness during them consists of measured, unhurried movement, just as the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, commanded when walking to the prayer, even though walking is movement toward it. What, then, of movement during the prayer? He said: “When you come to the prayer, do not come hastening. Come with calmness upon you. Pray whatever you catch, and make up whatever you miss.”

This is also an independent proof concerning the issue. Abū Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him, said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: “When the prayer has been commenced, do not come to it hastening. Come to it walking, with calmness upon you. Pray whatever you catch, and make up whatever you miss.” It was reported by al-Bukhārī, Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, and Ibn Mājah.

Abū Dāwūd said: Al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Abī Dhiʾb, Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd, Maʿmar, and Shuʿayb ibn Abī Hamza likewise narrated from al-Zuhrī: “Complete whatever you miss.” Ibn ʿUyayna narrated from al-Zuhrī: “Make it up.” Muhammad ibn ʿUmar narrated from Abū Salama, from Abū Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him, and Jaʿfar ibn Abī Rabīʿa narrated from al-Aʿraj, from Abū Hurayra: “Complete it.” Ibn Masʿūd narrated from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace: “Complete it.”

Abū Dāwūd also narrated from Abū Hurayra, from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that he said: “Come to the prayer with calmness upon you. Pray whatever you catch, and make up whatever preceded you.” Abū Dāwūd said: Ibn Sīrīn likewise narrated from Abū Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him: “And let him make it up.” Abū Rāfiʿ likewise narrated this from Abū Hurayra. As for Abū Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him, both “Complete it” and “Make it up” have been narrated from him; the reports from him differ.
