the meat of domestic donkeys, because the Prophet—may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him—rebuked those who, in this matter, relied on the absence of an explicit Quranic prohibition. He said: “Let me not find any one of you reclining on his couch when a command of mine reaches him concerning something I have commanded or forbidden, only for him to say, ‘The Quran shall decide between us: whatever we find therein to be lawful, we shall deem lawful, and whatever we find therein to be forbidden, we shall deem forbidden.’ Indeed, I was given the Book and its like along with it, and what the Messenger of Allah—may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him—has forbidden is like what Allah Most High has forbidden.”
This meaning is reliably transmitted from the Prophet—may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him—through more than one route.
