that night at Minā, where he led them in the noon, afternoon, sunset, night, and dawn prayers. He then journeyed with them to Namira by the route of Dabb. Namira lies outside Arafat, on its southern and western sides, and belongs neither to the Sanctuary nor to Arafat. A tent was pitched for him at Namira, and it was there that his Rightly Guided Caliphs would encamp after him. Markets were held there, and people would relieve themselves, eat, and attend to similar needs.

When the sun passed its zenith, he mounted, as did those riding with him, and he and the Muslims proceeded to the prayer place in the valley of Urana, where the mosque was later built. This location belongs neither to the Sanctuary nor to Arafat; rather, it forms a buffer between the two ritual precincts there—the non-sacred and the sacred. The standing place was approximately one mile away. There, from atop his mount, he delivered the Hajj sermon to them. It was a Friday.

He then dismounted and led them in the noon and afternoon prayers, shortening and combining them. He and the Muslims then proceeded to the standing place at Arafat, beside the mountain known as the Mount of Mercy. Its proper name is ‘Ilāl,’ following the same pattern as Hilāl, though the common people call the mountain Arafat. He and the Muslims remained engaged in remembrance and supplication until sunset. He then departed with them for Muzdalifa, where he prayed the sunset and night prayers after twilight had disappeared and before the baggage was unloaded at their encampment.

He spent the night there until dawn, then led the Muslims in the dawn prayer at the very beginning of its time, while it was still dark—earlier than he did on any other day. He then stood at ‘Qazah,’ the hill in Muzdalifa known as the Sacred Monument, although all of Muzdalifa is the Sacred Monument mentioned in the Quran. He remained standing there with the Muslims until it had grown very light, after which he departed with them and proceeded to Minā. He began there by stoning the Jamra of al-Aqaba, then returned to his lodging in Minā and shaved his head. He personally slaughtered sixty-three camels from the sacrificial animals he had brought and instructed Alī to slaughter the remainder, making one hundred camels in all. He then proceeded to Mecca and performed the Circumambulation of Ifāda. He had sent the vulnerable members of his household ahead from
