Abu Saʿid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek protection from the jinn and from the human eye, until the two protecting surahs—al-Muʿawwidhatayn—were revealed; once they were sent down he held fast to them and left everything else.” Al-Tirmidhi classed this narration as ḥasan (sound).
On faʾl (optimistic omens) and ṭiyarah (pessimistic superstitious omens)
The Prophet ﷺ said, “There is no contagion, and no ṭiyarah; the most accurate of these is faʾl.” They asked, “What is faʾl?” He replied, “A pleasant word that a person hears.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ liked faʾl. One instance occurred during the Hijrah journey: they met a man and asked his name. He answered, “Buraydah.” The Prophet remarked, “Our affair has cooled (burida).”
He also said, “I saw in a dream that I was in the house of ʿUqbah ibn Rāfiʿ and that we were offered fresh dates of Ibn Ṭāb. I interpreted the name Rāfiʿ (elevated) as a sign of our being raised in this world, the good outcome (ʿāqibah) as success for us in the Hereafter, and that our religion has become wholesome (ṭāb).”
