the last of these faculties to depart. Assign our retribution to those who wrong us, give us victory over those who show us enmity, do not make our trial in matters of our religion, do not let this world be our greatest concern or the extent of our knowledge, and do not set over us anyone who will show us no mercy.” Al-Tirmidhī said: “A good (ḥasan) hadith.”
On Anger
Allah the Exalted says: “And if a prompting from Satan should provoke you, then seek refuge with Allah; surely He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.” (Qur’an 41:36)
Sulaymān ibn Ṣurad reported: “I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when two men began to insult one another. One of them became so angry that his face turned red and the veins of his neck swelled. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘I know a word which, if he were to say it, what he feels would leave him. If he were to say, aʿūdhu billāhi min al-shayṭān al-rajīm (I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan), what he feels would leave him.’” Agreed upon.
ʿAṭiyyah ibn ʿUrwah narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Anger is from Satan, and Satan was created from fire, and fire is put out only with water. So if one of you becomes angry, let him perform ablution.” Recorded by Abū Dāwūd.
