On Gatherings
Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever sits in a gathering where idle talk becomes excessive, and before he rises from that gathering says: ‘Subhānaka Allāhumma wa bi-ḥamdik, ash-hadu an lā ilāha illā Ant, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilayk’ (Glory be to You, O Allah, and with Your praise. I testify that there is no deity but You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance), will have whatever occurred in that gathering forgiven for him.”
Al-Tirmidhī said: “A sound and good (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ) ḥadīth.”
In another narration it states: “If he has been in a righteous gathering, that formula will serve as its seal; and if the gathering was a mixture of right and wrong, it will atone for him.”
Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) also related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “No people rise from a gathering in which they failed to remember Allah Most High without rising as though they were leaving the carcass of a donkey; and it will be a source of regret for them.” Recorded by Abū Dāwūd and others.
Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them) said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would seldom stand up from a gathering without making the following supplication for his companions:
‘Allāhumma-qsim lanā min khashyatik mā taḥūlu bihi baynanā wa-bayna maʿāṣik, wa-min ṭāʿatik mā tuballighunā bihi jannatak, wa-min al-yaqīn mā tuhawwinu bihi ʿalaynā maṣāʾiba al-dunyā. Allāhumma mattiʿnā bi-asmāʿinā, wa-abṣārinā, wa-quwwatinā mā aḥyaitanā, wajʿal-hu…’
(O Allah, allot for us such reverence of You as will stand between us and disobedience to You; and grant us such obedience to You as will convey us to Your Paradise; and bless us with such certainty that the calamities of this world become easy for us to bear. O Allah, allow us to enjoy our hearing, our sight, and our strength for as long as You keep us alive, and make it…)
