It is also reported from al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “When a child is born to anyone, let him pronounce the adhān in the newborn’s right ear and the iqāmah in the left; Umm al-ṣibyān—a female jinn that afflicts infants—will never harm him.”
ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, “Infants used to be brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; he would invoke blessing for them and perform tahnīk, rubbing a softened date on their palates.” Recorded by Abū Dāwūd.
ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, relates that the Prophet ﷺ commanded that a newborn be named on the seventh day, that his hair be shaved to remove harm, and that the ʿaqīqah sacrifice be offered. Al-Tirmidhī graded this ḥadīth ḥasan (sound).
The Prophet ﷺ himself named his son Abraham, as well as Abraham the son of Abū Mūsā, ʿAbd Allāh the son of Abū Ṭalḥah, and al-Mundhir the son of Abū Usayd, all shortly after their births.
Abū al-Dardāʾ (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “On the Day of Resurrection you will be called by your names and your fathers’ names, so choose good names for yourselves.” This was recorded by Abū Dāwūd.
