Sālim reported that Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would say to a man when the latter was about to travel, “Come closer so that I may bid you farewell in the very manner the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to bid us farewell.” He would then say, “I entrust to Allah your religion, your trustworthiness, and the conclusion of your deeds.”
From another chain it is related that—meaning the Prophet ﷺ—whenever he bade someone farewell he would take the person’s hand and would not release it until that person was the one to let go. Al-Tirmidhī commented, “This is a sound and authentic (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ) hadith.”
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, I intend to travel; provide me with something (by way of advice).’ He replied, ‘May Allah provide you with piety.’ The man said, ‘And give me more.’ He answered, ‘And may He facilitate goodness for you wherever you are.’” Al-Tirmidhī said, “A fair, singular (ḥasan, gharīb) hadith.”
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) related that a man said, “O Messenger of Allah, I wish to travel, so counsel me.” He said, “Hold fast to the fear of Allah, and pronounce the takbīr (Allāhu akbar) whenever you reach a high place.” After the man turned away, the Prophet ﷺ supplicated, “O Allah, fold the distance for him and make the journey easy for him.” Al-Tirmidhī said, “A fair (ḥasan) hadith.”
