On Incantations
Abu Saʿid al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) related: “A party of the Prophet’s ﷺ Companions set out on a journey. They halted at one of the Arab clans and asked the people to host them, but the clan refused. While they were there, the chief of that tribe was bitten by a snake (or scorpion). They tried every remedy for him, yet nothing benefited him. Someone among the tribesmen said, ‘Why don’t you approach those travelers who have camped nearby? Perhaps one of them has something that will help.’
“They came to the Companions and said, ‘O company of men, our chief has been bitten and we have treated him with everything we know, but it has done no good. Does any one of you have something that might help?’ One of the Companions replied, ‘By Allah, I can perform ruqyah, but, by Allah, we asked you for hospitality and you refused. I will not recite a ruqyah for him unless you give us a fee.’ They therefore agreed to give them a flock of sheep.
“The Companion went to the chief, spat lightly on the affected spot, and recited: al-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbil-ʿālamīn (All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds). It was as though the man had been released from bonds—he rose and walked away showing no trace of pain.
“The tribesmen paid the Companions the reward they had promised. Some of the Companions said, ‘Let us divide it among ourselves,’ but the one who had performed the ruqyah said, ‘Do not do so until we go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, tell him what happened, and see what he commands us.’ When they reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and recounted the incident, he said, ‘How did you know that it is a ruqyah?’ Then he added, ‘You were right. Distribute it and set aside a share for me as well,’ and the Prophet ﷺ smiled.” Agreed upon.
ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek protection for al-Hasan and al-Husayn…"
