She added, “So when Abū Salamah passed away, I said exactly what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had instructed me, and Allah gave me someone better in exchange—namely, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself.” Recorded by Muslim.
She also said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in to see Abū Salamah when his eyes had become fixed. He closed them and then said, ‘When the soul is taken, the eyes follow it.’ Some of his family began to wail, whereupon he said, ‘Pray only for good for yourselves, for the angels say ʾĀmīn to whatever you utter.’ He then supplicated: ‘O Allah, forgive Abū Salamah, raise his rank among those who are rightly guided, look after the descendants he has left behind, forgive us and him, Lord of all the worlds, make his grave spacious for him, and illuminate it.’” Recorded by Muslim.
On Debt
ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A slave who had contracted for his freedom (mukātib) came to him and said, “I am unable to pay off the sum for my writ; help me.” ʿAlī replied, “Shall I teach you words that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me? If you were burdened with a debt as great as a mountain, Allah would pay it off for you. Say: ‘Allāhummaʾkfinī bi-ḥalālika ʿan ḥarāmika waʾghninī bifaḍlika ʿamman siwāk (O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful so that I need not resort to what You have made unlawful, and enrich me, by Your bounty, beyond dependence on anyone other than You).’” Al-Tirmidhī said: This ḥadīth is sound (ḥasan).
