It is also related that whenever the Prophet ﷺ saw something that pleased him he would say, “al-ḥamdu lillāh alladhī bi-niʿmatihi tatimmu ṣ-ṣāliḥāt (Praise be to Allah; through His favor righteous deeds are perfected),” and whenever he saw something displeasing he would say, “al-ḥamdu lillāh ʿalā kulli ḥāl (Praise be to Allah in every circumstance).”
What Befalls the Believer, Whether Great or Small
Allah the Exalted says: “Who, when disaster strikes them, say, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return.’ Such are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy, and it is they who are rightly guided.” (al-Baqarah 2:156–157)
It is narrated from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Let each of you utter the istirjāʿ in every situation—even when the strap of his sandal breaks—for that too is a calamity.”
Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘No servant is afflicted with a misfortune and then says, innā lillāh wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn, allāhummaʾjurnī fī muṣībatī waʾkhlu f lī khayran minhā (Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return; O Allah, reward me in my calamity and grant me something better in its place) except that Allah will reward him for his calamity and grant him something better in its place.’”
