Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ said: “My father sent me to the clan of Banū Ḥārithah with one of our servants—or a companion of ours. A caller from behind a garden wall called him by name, so the person with me looked over the wall but saw nothing. I mentioned this to my father, and he said, ‘Had I known you would meet something like that, I would not have sent you. Whenever you hear a voice, give the call to prayer, for I heard Abū Hurayrah relate that the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘When the call to prayer is made, Satan turns and flees.’” Recorded by Muslim.
It is also reported that when Zayd ibn Aslam was put in charge of the mining district and the people complained about the multitude of jinn there, he told them to pronounce the adhān at every time and to do so frequently; after that they saw nothing of them.
Abū al-Dardāʾ said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood to pray and we heard him say, ‘I seek refuge in Allah from you,’ then, ‘I curse you with the curse of Allah,’ three times, and he stretched out his hand as though seizing something. When he finished the prayer we said, ‘Messenger of Allah, we heard you say something in the prayer that we have never heard before, and we saw you extend your hand.’ He replied, ‘The enemy of Allah, Iblīs, came with a flaming brand of fire to put it in my face. I said, “I seek refuge in Allah from you,” three times; then I said, “I curse you with Allah’s complete curse,” three times, but he would not retreat. I then wanted to seize him—by Allah, were it not for the supplication of our brother Solomon, he would have been tied up so that the children of Medina could play with him.’” Recorded by Muslim.
ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ said, “I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, indeed Satan…’”
