“The supplication of Dhū’l-Nūn (Jonah) when he called out from the belly of the fish was: lā ilāha illā Ant, subḥānaka innī kuntu mina ẓ-ẓālimīn (There is no god but You; glory be to You; indeed I was among the wrongdoers). No Muslim ever offers this supplication in any matter whatsoever except that Allah answers him.” Recorded by al-Tirmidhī. In another wording: “I know a phrase which no one in distress ever utters without Allah granting him relief: it is the phrase of my brother Jonah.”
ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whenever a servant is afflicted by worry or sorrow and then says: ‘Allāhumma innī ʿabduka, wabnu ʿabdik, wabnu amatika, nāṣiyatī bi-yadik, māḍin fiyya ḥukmuk, ʿadlun fiyya qaḍāʾuk. Asʾaluka bikulli-sm-in huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fī kitābik, aw ʿallamtahu aḥadan min khalqik, aw istaʾtharta bihi fī ʿilmi l-ghaybi ʿindak, an tajʿala l-Qurʾāna rabīʿa qalbī, wa nūra ṣadrī, wa jalāʾa ḥuznī, wa dhahāba hammī (O Allah, I am Your servant, the son of Your male servant, the son of Your female servant; my forelock is in Your hand; Your command concerning me is ever executed and Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that is Yours, which You have named Yourself with, revealed in Your Book, taught to any of Your creation, or kept unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen with You, to make the Quran the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sorrow, and the remover of my anxiety),’—Allah will remove his worry and grief and replace them with relief.” Recorded by Aḥmad in his Musnad and by Ibn Ḥibbān in his Ṣaḥīḥ.
When Meeting the Enemy or a Tyrannical Ruler
Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī (may Allah be pleased with him) related that whenever the Prophet ﷺ feared a people he would say:
