Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, related: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me, ‘My son, when you enter upon your family, extend the greeting of peace; it will bring blessing upon you and upon the people of your household.’” Al-Tirmidhi said: This narration is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (sound and authentic).

Entering and Leaving the Mosque

It is reported from Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, and others that whenever the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, entered the mosque he would say: “Bismillah (in the name of Allah). Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammad (O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad),” and when he left he would say: “Bismillah. Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammad.”

Abu Humayd—or Abu Usayd—may Allah be pleased with them, narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “When any one of you enters the mosque, let him send peace upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and say: Allāhumma iftaḥ lī abwāba raḥmatik (O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy). When he exits, let him say: Allāhumma innī asʾaluka min faḍlik (O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty).” This is an authentic ḥadīth, and Muslim has recorded a similar wording.

ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr, may Allah be pleased with them both, reported that when the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, entered the mosque he would say: “Aʿūdhu billāhi l-ʿaẓīm, wa bi-wajhihi l-karīm, wa bi-sulṭānihi l-qadīm, min ash-shayṭān (I seek refuge in Allah the Magnificent, in His Noble Countenance, and in His Eternal Dominion, from Satan) …”
