the Cistern (ḥawḍ): the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, informed us that he will have a cistern¹ on the Day of Resurrection, at the Gathering Place. His followers—those who believed in him and kept to his way—will reach it and drink; and whoever takes but one draught from it will never feel thirst again. That is because the Day of Resurrection is a day of extreme ordeal and scorching heat, when thirst becomes unbearable. Allah therefore made this cistern a life-saving relief for the community of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, by which He will succour them. Everyone knows that the rain Allah sends down from the sky revives the earth and gives life to souls; in the same manner, the cistern is a saving mercy through which Allah will aid His servants at their moment of greatest need for water.
A ḥawḍ is a basin that collects water. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, described his ḥawḍ as vast: its length is the distance a traveller covers in a month and its width the distance of a month. Its drinking vessels are as numerous as the stars in the sky, and whoever drinks from it once will never thirst again. Its water is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey.²
