of this as an act of gratitude to Allah, and so that the community might thank their Lord for the favor of having their Messenger set above all other messengers.
The word Sayyid (“foremost, leader”) means the one who stands in front and guides; he ﷺ is therefore the best of the messengers, their imam and the one who precedes them.
As for the phrase “Beloved of the Lord of the Worlds,” it is open to criticism, for the description “beloved” on its own is not enough. Rather, he is the khalil (intimate friend) of the Lord of the Worlds, and khullah (that exclusive, intimate friendship) is higher than ordinary love. Love has levels, and the highest of them is khullah, a pure and undivided love. This station was granted to only two of creation: Abraham—“Allah took Abraham as a khalil” (al-Nisaʾ 4:125)—and our Prophet ﷺ, who said, “Indeed Allah has taken me as a khalil just as He took Abraham as a khalil.” (1)
Hence one should not say, “Beloved of Allah,” for that description may apply to every believer and therefore confers no special distinction on the Prophet ﷺ. As for khullah, no one can reach him in that rank.
