and to each Allah has promised the finest reward. [57:10] The “Conquest” meant here is the Treaty of al-Hudaybiyyah.
Next in rank are the Emigrants (Muhājirūn) in general, then the Helpers (Anṣār), for Allah places the Emigrants before the Helpers in the Quran. The Exalted says, “The foremost, the first of the Emigrants and the Helpers…” (9:100). He also says, “For the poor Emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their wealth, seeking bounty from Allah and His pleasure and supporting Allah and His Messenger—such are the truthful.” (59:8). These, then, are the Emigrants.
Concerning the Helpers He, Most High, says: “And those who had settled in the city and in faith before them love those who emigrated to them and find no desire in their hearts for what the latter have been given. They give them preference over themselves even though they themselves are in need. Whoever is protected from the stinginess of his own soul—it is they who will be successful.” (59:9)
Thus Allah set the Emigrants and their deeds ahead of the Helpers and their deeds, indicating that the Emigrants are superior, for they left their homelands and their property and migrated in Allah’s cause, a clear proof of the sincerity of their faith. Consequently, love and loyalty are due to all the Companions. We do not interfere in the wars that occurred among them; whatever fighting took place was based on their own interpretation. They were mujtahids: whoever among them was correct receives a double reward, and whoever erred receives a single reward, and likewise with them
