He—exalted is He—has said in His Book, “He forgives whatever is less than that for whom He wills” (Q 4:48). Yet, if He so wills, He punishes them in the Fire according to His justice.
Then, out of His mercy and by the intercession of the intercessors among His obedient servants, He will bring them out—unlike the Khārijites, who maintain that whoever enters the Fire never leaves it, and unlike the Murjiʾah, who claim such sinners will never pass through the Fire at all. Both views are erroneous, for we cannot guarantee their deliverance; they remain under the divine will. If He wills, He pardons them out of grace; if He wills, He punishes them out of justice. Allah has not wronged them; He punishes them only for the deeds that made them deserving of it. Allah never punishes one who has not disobeyed Him, nor does He treat the sinner and the upright believer alike:
“Shall We treat those who submit as We treat the criminals?
What is the matter with you? How do you judge?” (Q 68:35–36);
“Shall We treat those who believe and do righteous deeds like those who spread corruption on earth? Shall We treat the righteous like the wicked?” (Q 38:28).
This is a reproach from Allah, exalted is He:
“Or do those who commit evil deeds think that We shall make them like those who believe and do righteous works—equal in their life and in their death? How ill they judge!” (Q 45:21).
Authentic reports from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ likewise affirm that the disobedient among the monotheists will be taken out of the Fire (1), either by the bounty of Allah Most High or through intercession.
