Nor do we declare it to be created, nor do we set ourselves against the Muslim community:
We do not say, “The Quran is created,” as the Jahmiyyah claim, for such a statement is disbelief, a rejection of Allah’s speech, and an attribution of deficiency to Him—implying that He does not speak—whereas anyone who does not speak is deficient and cannot be a deity.
Thus, when the people of the Samaritan said, “This is your god and the god of Moses,” referring to the calf, the idol, Allah—majestic and exalted—said: “Do they not see that it neither answers them with any speech nor possesses any power to harm or benefit them?” (Taha 20:89). His words “that it does not answer them with any speech” mean that it does not speak, and this makes clear the futility of worshipping it.
In another verse He says: “Did they not see that it could neither speak to them nor guide them to any path?” (Al-Aʿraf 7:148). Speech is an attribute of perfection, whereas the absence of speech is an attribute of deficiency. Allah is exalted above every deficiency and is characterised by every perfection.
Nor do we depart from the Muslim majority. The community of Muslims believes that the Quran is truly sent down, uncreated; it originates from Him and to Him it will return—this is the Muslims’ creed concerning the Quran. Likewise, we do not oppose the Muslim community in anything upon which they have unanimously agreed in matters of religion. Allah says: “Whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him and follows a way other than that of the believers—We shall turn him to what he has turned to, and roast him in Hell—what an evil destination!” (Al-Nisa 4:115).
“It originated from Allah”—not, as some deviant groups claim, that Gabriel took it from the al-Lawh al-Mahfuz (the Preserved Tablet); rather, he heard it directly from Allah—“and to Him it will return,” meaning:
