and others like them.
The only real apprehension concerns a solitary narrator, for error and forgetfulness frequently befall human beings. Nevertheless, there were hadith masters whom people knew to be extremely far removed from such lapses—al-Shaʿbi, al-Zuhri, ʿUrwa, Qatadah (1), al-Thawri (2), and their peers, especially al-Zuhri in his era and al-Thawri in his.
Indeed, one might even say, “With Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, no mistake is known despite the great number of his narrations and the vast scope of his memory.” (3)
(1) Al-Aswad ibn Yazid ibn Qays al-Nakhai al-Kufi studied under Ibn Masud, Aishah, and Abu Musa. Ibrahim al-Nakhai and his contemporaries studied under him. He completed the Quran every two nights, performed Hajj eighty times, and died in 74 AH.
(2) Qatadah ibn Diamah al-Sadusi al-Basri, blind from birth, was one of the eminent imams. He transmitted from Anas, Said ibn al-Musayyib, and Ibn Sirin; hadith masters and imams transmitted from him, and the compilers of the Sahih collections relied on his reports. He died in 117 AH.
(3) Sufyan al-Thawri, of Banu Thawr ibn Abd Manah ibn Tabikhah, was a Kufan and one of the eminent imams and hadith masters, distinguished for his knowledge, asceticism, and scrupulous piety. He was born in 77 AH and died in Basra in 161 AH.
وإنما يخاف على الواحد من الغلط فإن الغلط والنسيان كثيراً ما يعرض للإنسان، ومن الحفاظ من قد عرف الناس بعده عن ذلك جداً، كما عرفوا حال الشعبي والزهري وعروة وقتادة (١) والثوري (٢) وأمثالهم، لا سيما الزهري في زمانه والثوري في زمانه.
فإنه قد يقول القائل: إن ابن شهاب الزهري، لا يعرف له غلط مع كثرة حديثه وسعة حفظه (٣) .
(١) الأسود: هو ابن يزيد بن قيس النخعي الكوفي، أخذ عن ابن مسعود وعائشة وأبي موسي، وأخذ عنه إبراهيم النخعي وطبقته، كان يختم القرآن في كل ليلتين، وحج ثمانين حجة وتوفي سنة ٧٤هـ.
(٢) قتادة بن دعامة السدوسي البصري الأكمه أحد الأئمة الأعلام، روى عن أنس وسعيد بن المسيب وابن سيرين وروى عن الحفاظ والأئمة واحتج به أصحاب الصحاح وتوفي سنة ١١٧هـ.
(٣) سفيان الثوري من بني ثور ابن عبد مناة بن طابخة، كوفي من أعلام الأئمة الحفاظ المتميزين بالمعرفة والزهد والورع. ولد سنة ٧٧هـ وتوفي بالبصرة سنة ١٦١هـ.
