(1) Muhammad ibn Sirin al-Basri, the freedman of Anas and a contemporary of al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Hasan. He studied under some of the Companions, and a group of leading Successors (Tabi'un) transmitted from him. Ibn Sad said: “He was trustworthy, reliable, highly eminent, an imam, a jurist, and a man of extensive learning.” He died in 110 AH. (2) Al-Qasim ibn Muhammad, the grandson of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and one of the seven jurists. He studied under some of the Companions, and a group of distinguished Successors transmitted from him. Abu al-Zinad said: “I have not seen anyone more knowledgeable of the Sunnah than al-Qasim.” He died in 106 AH. (3) Said ibn al-Musayyib al-Makhzumi al-Madani was the foremost, most distinguished, and most virtuous scholar and jurist among the Successors. Abd Allah ibn Umar said: “By Allah, he is one of those whose example is followed.” Abu Hatim said: “He was the most reliable of the Successors in his transmissions from Abu Hurayrah, because he was his son-in-law.” He was born in 15 AH and died in 93 AH. (4) Ubaydah ibn Amr al-Salmani, of the Murad tribe: the Prophet died while Ubaydah was on his way to meet him. He studied under Ali and Ibn Masud, and al-Shabi, al-Nakhai, and Ibn Sirin transmitted from him. He rivaled Shurayh in judicial judgment and knowledge. He died in 72 AH. (5) Alqamah ibn Qays al-Nakhai al-Kufi was one of the eminent scholars. He transmitted from the four Rightly Guided Caliphs and their contemporaries, and leading imams, such as Ibrahim al-Nakhai and al-Shabi, transmitted from him. He died in 62 AH at the age of ninety.
