(1) Ata ibn Abi Rabah was a Yemeni from al-Jund, where Muadh ibn Jabal had settled after being sent by the Prophet. Ata later moved to Mecca, attained the rank of an imam and jurist, and became the leading authority for legal rulings there. Ibn Abbas said to the people of Mecca, “Do you come to me while Ata is among you?” He died in 114 AH. For this reason, Ata was among the most knowledgeable people concerning the rites of pilgrimage. (2) Ikrima, the freedman of Ibn Abbas, was Abu Abd Allah Ikrima al-Barbari, one of the eminent scholars. Al-Shabi said, “No one remains more knowledgeable of the Book of Allah than Ikrima.” He died in 105 AH. (3) Tawus ibn Kaysan was also a Yemeni from al-Jund. He met fifty Companions, attained the rank of the eminent imams, and learned from the select leading figures among the Followers. Ibn Abbas said, “I believe Tawus to be among the people of Paradise.” He died on the Day of Tarwiyah in 106 AH, and Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik led his funeral prayer.
