(2) He was Abd al-Rahman ibn Amr al-Auzai, one of the eminent imams of the Muslims. His knowledge and jurisprudence were followed in the Syrian lands during the end of the Umayyad dynasty and the beginning of the Abbasid dynasty. He learned from Ata, Ibn Sirin, Makhul, Qatada, and Nafi. Among those who learned from him were Aqil ibn Ziyad al-Saksaki al-Dimashqi; the judge of Damascus, Yahya ibn Hamza ibn Waqid al-Hadrami; Baqiyya ibn al-Walid al-Kilai al-Himsi; and most of the transmitters of Sunnah, jurisprudence, and knowledge among his contemporaries in the Syrian lands and other Muslim regions. The imam, jurist, and hadith master Ishaq ibn Ibrahim ibn Rahuyah said: “When al-Auzai, al-Thawri, and Malik agree on a matter, it is Sunnah.” Al-Auzai was born in 88 AH and died in 175 AH. He was buried in Ras Beirut, in the district that bears his name to this day.
(3) Mujahid was Abu al-Hajjaj Mujahid ibn Jabr al-Makki, the freedman of al-Saib ibn Abi al-Saib. He was born in 21 AH and died in Mecca in 102 AH while prostrating. It is stated in Khulasat Tahdhib al-Kamal that he recited the Quran to Ibn Abbas three times.
