The most knowledgeable people about the Prophet’s campaigns are the inhabitants of Medina, followed by the people of al-Sham (Greater Syria), and then the people of Iraq.
Explanation
This is a very important point, for every land and every group may surpass others in a particular area of the religion. Therefore, if you are asked, “Who knows the campaigns best?” answer as the Shaykh—may Allah have mercy on him—answered: the people of Medina, then those of Syria, then those of Iraq. The Shaykh justified this as follows:
***
The people of Medina are the most knowledgeable because the campaigns actually took place among them. The Syrians were a people of conquest and jihad, so they possessed information about warfare and military biography that others did not. For that reason scholars greatly esteemed the book that Abū Isḥāq al-Fazārī composed on the subject, and they considered al-Awzaʿī (1) more proficient in this field than the scholars of the other regions.
Explanation
Here the author is referring specifically to Abū Isḥāq al-Fazārī.
