Sharh Muqaddimat al-Tafsir li-Ibn TaymiyyahIbn al-'Uthaymin

Similarly, with the name of the boy whom al-Khidr killed and the like: our only avenue to knowledge about such details is transmitted reports. Whatever has been reliably conveyed from the Prophet ﷺ—such as the statement that Moses’ companion was al-Khidr (1)—is deemed established. As for what is merely drawn from the People of the Book—reports transmitted from Kaʿb, Wahb, Muhammad ibn Ishaq (2), and others who relied on Israelite traditions—it may neither be confirmed nor denied unless supported by definitive proof.

(1) Narrated by al-Bukhari in the Book of Knowledge, chapter: “What Is Mentioned Regarding Musa’s Departure,” no. 74; and by Muslim in the Book of Virtues, chapter: “One of al-Khidr’s Virtues,” no. 2380. (2) Our shaykh Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “In my copy, there is a marginal note on these individuals: Ka'b al-Ahbar, Abu Ishaq Ka'b ibn Mati' al-Hibr, was a Yemeni convert from among the People of the Book. He lived during the time of the Companions and narrated some Prophetic hadiths from them, while they related from him some accounts of the prophets. He died in Homs in 32 AH, during the caliphate of Uthman. Wahb ibn Munabbih was likewise Yemeni and was born toward the end of Uthman’s caliphate. He narrated from Abdullah ibn Abbas and Abdullah ibn Umar; among those who narrated from him were Amr ibn Dinar al-Jumahi al-Makki, Awf ibn Jamilah al-Abdi, and their contemporaries. He served as judge of Sana'a and transmitted extensively from books of Isra'iliyyat (Judeo-Christian reports). He wrote a book on qadar (divine decree), but later regretted it and retracted it. Aside from that, he was regarded as trustworthy and truthful; his hadiths from his brother Hammam are found in both Sahih collections. He died in 114 AH. Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Yasar al-Madani was one of the leading authorities, particularly in maghazi (Prophetic campaigns) and siyar (biographical accounts). Ibn Ma'in said: ‘He is trustworthy, but not a decisive authority.’ Ahmad said: ‘His hadith is sound.’ He died in 151 AH.”
