In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful
Foreword by the Committee
All praise is for Allah; we praise Him, seek His help and forgiveness, and seek refuge in Allah from the evils within ourselves and from our misdeeds. Whomever Allah guides none can mislead, and whomever He leaves to stray none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah, alone without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. May Allah shower abundant peace and blessings upon him, his family, his Companions, and all who follow them with excellence until the Day of Recompense.
To proceed: Among the manifestations of Allah’s favor—and to Him belong all praise and thanks—is that He enabled our esteemed Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn (may Allah have mercy on him) to explain the book “Muqaddimat al-Tafsīr” (An Introduction to Qur’anic Exegesis) by Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) in 1408 AH, as part of the scholarly lessons he used to deliver in the Grand Mosque of ʿUnayzah.
The work was first published in 1415 AH, and its inaugural edition was prepared—may Allah reward him well—by the distinguished Professor Dr. ʿAbd-Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Ṭayyār.
In the present edition we have observed the rules and guidelines that our Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) set for the preparation and publication of his writings.
We would like to draw the reader’s attention to the fact that all of the footnotes—apart from the citation and grading of hadiths—were either penned by our Shaykh from his own notes or read to him during the lessons.
We ask Allah, exalted is He, to make this work purely for His noble countenance, pleasing to Him, and beneficial to His servants; to reward our noble Shaykh on behalf of Islam and the Muslims with the finest recompense, to multiply his reward, and to raise his rank among the rightly guided. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, Ever-Near.
May Allah’s peace, blessings, and grace be upon His servant and Messenger, the Seal of the Prophets, the leader of the God-fearing, the master of the first and the last—our Prophet Muhammad—and upon his family, his Companions, and those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgement.
