and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps, fearing death; but Allah encompasses the disbelievers.”
Al-Baqarah 11–19
Because the guidance with which Allah sent His Messenger has the qualities of water, which gives life, and of light, which brings illumination, He set forth these two parables. As Allah Most High says:
“Can one who was dead, whom We brought to life and gave a light by which to walk among people, be like one who is in darkness, never to emerge from it?”
Al-An‘ām 122
He likewise sets forth a parable using both in His words:
“He sends down water from the sky, and valleys flow according to their capacity, while the torrent carries swelling foam. A similar foam arises from what they heat in the fire to make ornaments or utensils. Thus Allah illustrates truth and falsehood. The foam is cast away, while that which benefits people remains on the earth. Thus Allah sets forth parables.”
Al-Ra‘d 17.
Allah Most High also says:
“Have you not seen those who claim to believe in what has been revealed to you and what was revealed before you? They wish to seek judgment from false authorities, although they were commanded to reject them. Satan wishes to lead them far astray. * When they are told, ‘Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger,’ you see the hypocrites turning resolutely away from you. * How will it be when a calamity befalls them because of what their own hands have done, and then they come to you, swearing by Allah, ‘We intended nothing but good and reconciliation’? * Those are the ones whose hearts Allah knows. So turn away from them, admonish them, and speak to them words that reach their very souls.”
Al-Nisā’ 60–63.
Among the greatest calamities is for a person to suffer harm in a matter such that he can attain neither happiness nor salvation
