from Allah is established in reality, whether we know it through our reason or not. In itself, it is independent of our knowledge and reason, whereas we need it and need to know it through our reason. When reason comes to know revelation as it is in itself, it gains knowledge of it and of the matters it contains that a person needs in this world and the Hereafter. It benefits from this knowledge and thereby acquires a quality it did not previously possess. Without this knowledge, it would be ignorant and deficient.
But if he means that reason is the foundation of our knowledge of revelation and our evidence for its truth—and this is what he intended—then he is asked:
“By reason here, do you mean our innate faculty, or the knowledge we have acquired through that faculty?”
You did not mean the first, nor could you have meant it, because that innate faculty is not knowledge that could conceivably conflict with revelation. Like life, it is a prerequisite for all knowledge, whether rational or revealed. Whatever is a prerequisite for something cannot be incompatible with it. Life and the innate faculty are prerequisites for all knowledge, whether revealed or rational, and therefore cannot be incompatible with it. It is also a prerequisite for belief arrived at through inference—even if not knowledge—and therefore cannot be incompatible with or opposed to it.
If, by the reason that serves as evidence for revelation and as its foundation, you mean knowledge acquired through reason, then you are told:
It is well known that not everything known through reason serves as a foundation for revelation or as evidence for its truth. The things known through reason are too numerous to enumerate, whereas knowing that revelation is true depends, at most, on what establishes the truthfulness of the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
Not all rational knowledge establishes the truthfulness of the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Rather, his truthfulness is established through what shows that Allah Most High sent him, such as establishing the existence of the Creator and His confirmation of the Messenger through signs, and other such matters.
