Al-Khallāl said:
Abū Bakr al-Marwazī informed us, saying: I heard one of the elders say: I heard ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Mahdī say: Sufyān al-Thawrī rejected compulsion and said, “Allah formed His servants with their innate dispositions.”
Al-Marwazī said: “I think he was referring to what the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to al-Ashajj of ‘Abd al-Qays”—namely, his words recorded in Sahīh Muslim:
“You possess two qualities that Allah loves: forbearance and deliberateness.”
He asked, “Are these two qualities I have cultivated, or two qualities with which I was naturally endowed?”
He replied, “Rather, they are two qualities with which you were naturally endowed.”
He said, “Praise be to Allah, who endowed me with two qualities that He loves.”
For this reason, al-Bukhārī and others cited the words of Allah Most High as evidence that the actions of His servants are created:
“Indeed, mankind was created anxious: distressed when evil touches him, and withholding when good touches him.” [al-Mi‘rāj: 19–21]
Thus, Allah Most High states that He created man with this disposition.
