In Sahīh Muslim, Anas said:

“We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when he laughed. He asked, ‘Do you know what I am laughing at?’ We replied, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’

“He said, ‘At the servant’s conversation with his Lord. He says, “My Lord, have You not granted me protection from injustice?” He replies, “Indeed.” The servant then says, “I will accept no witness against myself except one from my own self.” He replies, “Your own self is sufficient as a witness against you, and the noble recording angels as witnesses.”

“‘His mouth is then sealed, and his limbs are told, “Speak of his deeds.” They speak of his deeds. Then he is allowed to speak, and he says, “Away with you, far away! It was you I was defending!”’”

In the two Sahīh collections, Anas narrates that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will say to the person receiving the lightest punishment in the Fire, ‘If you possessed everything on earth, would you ransom yourself with it?’ He will reply, ‘Yes.’ He will then say to him, ‘I wanted something easier than this from you while you were in Adam’s loins: that you associate no partners with Me. Yet you insisted on associating partners with Me.’”
