the words of the Most High:
“They will not cease to differ * except those upon whom your Lord has mercy; and for this He created them.” [Hūd: 119],
and His words:
“Indeed, those who differ concerning the Book are in profound discord.” [Al-Baqarah: 176].
Likewise, the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, accords with the Book of Allah. An example is the well-known hadith from him, part of which Muslim narrated from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, while the remainder is known from the Musnad of Ahmad and other works, through ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather:
“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came out to his Companions while they were debating divine decree. One man was saying, ‘Has Allah not said such and such?’ and another was saying, ‘Has Allah not said such and such?’ His face looked as though pomegranate seeds had been crushed against it. He said: ‘Is this what you were commanded to do? This very thing destroyed those before you: they set parts of Allah’s Book against others. The Book of Allah was revealed only so that its parts would confirm one another, not contradict one another. Consider what you have been commanded to do and do it, and what you have been forbidden to do and avoid it.’”
